The Welch Review
Politics, philosophy, and the ideas underneath them

Statement of purpose
The Welch Review is written by Brandon Welch. It concerns politics and the philosophy underneath politics — the arguments about legitimacy, obligation, freedom and justice that every practical dispute eventually bottoms out in, whether or not anyone involved says so.
The aim is not to be first, or loudest, or comprehensive. It is to take one question at a time and stay with it long enough to say something that is still true a year later. Essays appear when they are finished. Some weeks that means nothing appears at all.
I try to state the strongest version of the position I'm arguing against before I argue against it, and to be explicit about which claims are load-bearing. Where I'm uncertain, I say so. Where I've changed my mind since an earlier piece, I say that too — the archive is a record, not a manifesto, and it is allowed to contain disagreements with itself.
If you find an error of fact, I want to hear about it. If you think an argument fails, I want to hear about that as well; the address below reaches me directly.
